The National Police Commissioner General Khehla Sitole invited members of the media to Arcelor Mittal Steel on Wednesday, where thousands of firearms were destroyed.
The 30 000 firearms were either seized, surrendered or forfeited to the state.
The last time SAPS destroyed so many weapons was on the 27th of October 2016 when they seized a large number of illegal guns through planned operations which resulted in the accumulation of their safe storage facilities.
SAPS said they will continue to fight the proliferation of illegal firearms and ammunition as they pose a threat to the safety and security of the inhabitants of this country.
In order to prevent the commission of serious and violent crimes and well as to stamp the authority of the State, police have to continue to actively detect and remove these illegal firearms from circulation.
