A police officer from Cape Town, who is an avid cyclist, conducted an operation near the Woodstock bridge on Saturday, where robbers have terrorised cyclists.
Lieutenant Colonel Johan Pentz patrolled the notorious route on his bicycle to gain first-hand information about the robberies while his backup team was nearby.
Police Spokesperson Colonel Andre Traut says while Pentz was cycling, a suspect managed to grab his cellular phone pouch in his back pocket before fleeing on foot.
He says the suspect was pursued and apprehended not far from the scene.
The 34-year-old foreign national also had a tablet in his possession that he could not account for.
He is expected to appear in court on Monday.
