SAPA closes its doors after 77 years

The SA Press Association ceased to operate at midnight on Tuesday after a proud 7-decade-long history.

It marked the end of an era for the South African wire service provider which filed its first news story on the 1st of July 1938.

The National Press Club of South Africa paid tribute to SAPA, saying it was indeed a sad day in the media history of South Africa.

It said being in business for 77 years was no mean feat -  more so in such a cut-throat business where accuracy and speed is the order of the day.

In late February,  the SA Press Association announced it would send out its last story on the 31st of March after a decision by the board to liquidate the company and cease all operations.
