SANDF soldiers missing after night time exercise

A Malawi soldier has drowned and two SANDF members are missing when a night-time sea exercise went awry.

An SANDF statement says the incident happened earlier this week during an exercise by special forces from Southern African Development Community Forces, known as Exercise Welwitchia.

SANDF spokesperson, captain Zamo Sithole, says two Baracuda Boats were approaching Walivs Bay for a beach landing when one executed a power turn and was flooded by a huge wave before capsizing.

The second boat went to the assistance of the stricken vessel but when the stricken soldiers scrambled onto the vessel it also capsized.

Sithole says 11 of the sixteen crew were picked up by an Angolan boat but a Malawian soldier drowned and two South Africans are missing.

The two capsized vessels were found 10 miles away.

The search for the missing soldiers is continuing.
