The South African National Defence Force has released the names of the soldiers who died during a recent battle with M23 rebels in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
Their deaths have sparked calls for the South Africans in DRC to come home.
Defence Minister Angie Motshekga and the military top brass have sent their condolences to the families of fallen soldiers.
It’s not yet clear when their remains will be repatriated from the DRC.
The SANDF said the soldiers were part of the SANDF contingent deployed to the region as part of both the Southern African Development Community Mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo (SAMIDRC), and the United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUSCO).
“They displayed extraordinary courage in their confrontation with the M23 armed group,” the SAND said.
