CAPE TOWN, July 4 (ANA) – Lukhanyo Calata, the Cape Town parliamentary reporter who led the charge in the Western Cape province against apparent censorship at the public broadcaster, was on Monday charged with contravening SABC rules.
Calata, the son of struggle activist Fort Calata of the Cradock Four, confirmed to African News Agency that he had been informed he would face disciplinary action – something he predicted while participating in a media-led protest at the SABC Cape Town offices on Friday.
He confirmed he would oppose the charge, which relates to him having spoken out.
"I am from a family of fighters", said.
Calata had criticised the SABC’s controversial decision to no longer cover protests in the country, receiving widespread support for his stance.
The charge makes Calata the seventh SABC employee targetted for voicing concern about censorship.
At least six others have been targetted by the SABC. On Thursday, Busisiwe Ntuli, Krivani Pillay, and Jacques Steenkamp were charged with "liaising with the media" while three others – Thandeka Gqubule, Foeta Krige, and Suna Venter – were suspended at an earlier stage.
