SA schools on feeding scheme to remove pilchards with immediate effect

The Department of Education has instructed all school nutrition Programmes in the country to remove canned pilchards from their menu with immediate effect.

This follows the outcome of an investigation which revealed a deficiency in the canning process.

The department said pilchard is a common item consumed in all of the schools which offer the Nutritional programme to more than 9 million learners every day.

Only certain brands, especially no-name brands are affected by the recall.

The Department has advised provinces to suspend serving pilchards in the menu with immediate effect, check all their stock against the recall list and replace the food with another source of protein.

The National Regulator for Compulsory Specifications, however, verified that all Lucky Star products are safe for consumption and not implicated in the recall
