South Africa recorded 10 939 new Covid19 infections in the 24 hours up to Saturday night, bringing the total number of cases reported since March to 912 477.
Health Minister, Dr. Zweli Mkhize, said 254 new deaths were reported, 85 of these were in the Eastern Cape and 74 in the Western Cape.
The total number of deaths in South Africa due to the coronavirus now stands at 24 539.
Mkhize said the recovery rate was around 86 percent.
Meanwhile, the Eastern Cape Health Department said in its report dated 11 PM on 19 December said that “Nelson Mandela Bay Metro and Sarah Baartman have seen a “significant decrease in the number of new cases”.
“BC Metro, NM Mero, Chris Hani, Sarah Baartman, and OR Tambo have more than 2000 active cases,” the EC Health Department said.
However, the provincial department noted a more than 20% increase in new cases in Alfred Nzo, Chris Hani, Joe Gqabi and OR Tambo Districts.
