PARLIAMENT, June 28 (ANA) – Parliament’s ad hoc committee tasked with recommending a candidate to succeed Thuli Madonsela as public protector will consider a total of 59 people for the job, it emerged on Tuesday.
Briefing journalists in Parliament, committee chairwoman Makhosi Khoza said MPs received 73 nominations, among them humanitarian and former first lady Graca Machel, former finance minister Nhlanhla Nene, renowned State prosecutor Gerrie Nel, former President Thabo Mbeki, retired deputy chief justice Dikgang Moseneke, and advocate Dumisa Ntsebeza.
Khoza said Machel, Nene and Nel declined nomination, while the committee had not received formal written nominations for Mbeki, Moseneke and Ntsebeza, meaning they would be disqualified.
"Other candidates were unreachable to confirm their nomination by end of business, Monday 27 June 2016, and these nominees will be removed from the list," she said.
The names of the candidates, said Khoza, would be published on the parliamentary website. Members of the public can send comments and objections to the committee via its secretary Vhonani Ramaano at vramaano@parliament.gov.za before Friday July 8. This is also the deadline by which candidates should complete and return a questionaire which would be sent to them on Wednesday.
