JOHANNESBURG, October 16 (ANA) – The Portfolio Committee on Home Affairs in Parliament has urged the department to speedily issue people affected by floods with necessary civic documents.
In a statement at the weekend the committee said it had “observed with shock” the recent devastating floods that affected residents of KwaZulu-Natal especially in the eThekwini Municipality.
“In light of this obligation, the committee has urged the Department of Home Affairs to activate its civic services and assist the victims of the floods with issuance of civic documentation such as IDs and Birth Certificates that might have been lost in the floods,” said the committee on Saturday.
“The speedy issuance of these civic documentation will go a long way in enabling the victims to start a process towards rebuilding their lives.”
The committee also called on non-governmental agencies and donors to lend a helping hand to reduce the difficulties faced by flood survivors.
“The government is doing all it can, but it cannot carry the burden alone without the assistance of donors …”
