South Africa moved to Adjusted Alert Level 1 at midnight on Thursday with restrictions eased as the country prepares for the Local Government Elections.
President Ramaphosa said that the number of people allowed to attend indoor meetings or gatherings will increase from 250 to 750, while the number of people allowed outdoors jumps from 500 to 2000.
He appealed to political parties to ensure that their supporters adhere to the Covi19 restrictions.
Restrictions on funerals remain in place, while so-called 'after tears' gatherings remain prohibited.
Ramaphosa said Cabinet approved changes to the curfew time, now from 12 midnight to 4 am, with non-essential establishments to close at 11 pm.
The President also announced the introduction of the Vooma vaccination weekend, which will see him and senior government officials hit the ground encouraging people to get vaccinated.
Ramaphosa said 17 million vaccine doses have been administered and that over 8.3 million people are now fully vaccinated.
He also announced that the Department of Health would introduce a “vaccine certificate” to facilitate travel and access to establishments that require proof of vaccination.
The National Institute of Communicable Diseases reported on Thursday that there were
1678 news cases, with 101 deaths reported in the last 24-hour reporting period.
The NICD said there were 41 792 active cases in the country, with 2 393 active cases in the Eastern Cape.
