Anglo American
South African mining giant, Anglo American, has unveiled "the world's first" hydrogen-powered truck to be used in the company's mines.
Anglo American said the global response to climate change, specifically the decarbonisation of energy, transport, and industry in general, is driving a major transition towards a low-carbon future.
According to information on the company's website, Anglo's commitment to supporting this transition is through its FutureSmartMining programme, which it says is "designed to bring together technology and digitalisation to drive sustainable outcomes."
The mining giant says it was already targeting carbon-neutral operations across the board by 2040, with eight divisions expected to reach that goal by 2030.
To this end, Anglo introduced its pilot nuGenTM Zero Emmisson Haulage Solution, a hydrogen-powered ultra-class mine haul truck.
"It's an ambitious project that marks the first time a truck of this size and load capacity, a 220 ton truck with a load capacity of 290 tons, has been converted to run on hydrogen that will be produced on-site in hybrid combination with a battery," Anglo American said on its website.
