The first ever middle ear transplant was successfully performed by a team of doctors at the Steve Biko Academic Hospital in Pretoria.
A 35-year-old man, whose middle ear was completely damaged in a car accident, was the first recipient of the transplant, which restored his hearing.
The procedure effectively replaces the smallest bones in the body that make up the middle ear.
3D-printing technology was then used to print these bones.
The Minister of Health Dr. Aaron Motsoaledi says they will do everything in their power to assist Professor Tshifularo to get all the help he needs. He also called upon donors especially the business community to give their financial support.
