South African Breweries (SAB) will be offering legal assistance to seven of their employees who were arrested at a roadblock on the N1 in Silverton in Gauteng on Wednesday.
Police held a massive roadblock where a total of 38 people were arrested including seven from SAB.
According to police, the arrests included a manager from SAB, truck drivers and two fork lifters who were transporting beer.
The sale and transportation of alcohol during the nationwide lockdown is prohibited as set out in the Disaster Management Act of 2020.
SAB said the movement of beer to their seven breweries was specifically provided for in the lockdown regulations.
It says the alcohol in transit at the time of the arrest and seizure was packaged inventory which had to be moved to an SAB owned off-site facility as the warehouses have reached their legal storage limit.
SAB said they support the Government’s call for lockdown and they are committed to complying with the Disaster Management Act.
The Company assured the public that they were not in contravention of the law and will assist their arrested employees with legal representation.
