Royal visit could boost tourism to SA

The Departement of Tourism said it was optimistic that the visit to South Africa by the Duke and Duchess of Sussex will boost tourism to the country.

Prince Harry and his wife, Meghan Markle, are on the first official tour as a family since their son's birth in May 2019.

The Royal family's 10-day tour kicked off in Cape Town on Monday where they were expected to take part in a workshop that teaches children about their rights as well as visiting the District Six Museum.

Tourism Minister Mmamoloko Kubayi-Ngubane said she hopes there will be a surge in tourism following the visit.

"The couple is very active on social media platforms. My anticipation is that there are many people who are going to hear and interact with South Africa for the very first through their posts," she said.

"Their fans are likely to want to come to where they have been, including to where they have stayed once it's released. I expect a lot of people wanting to stay there," added Kubayi-Ngubane.

The Royal couple is also expected to meet Archbishop Desmond Tutu and his wife, Leah, at the headquarters for their Desmond and Leah Tutu Legacy Foundation on Wednesday before proceeding to Botswana on Thursday.
