The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (Ipid) confirmed that its boss Robert McBride appeared in the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday, on a charge related to the contravention of the Children’s Act.
“He was released on bail of R10 000 with conditions. The next court date is 02 October 2017. Mr McBride would like the trial to start as soon as possible so that he can clear his name,” the Ipid said in a statement.
“As this matter is already in the courts, McBride had been advised not to comment further.”
Earlier the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) confirmed that McBride, accused of assaulting his teenage daughter, briefly appeared in court on Wednesday.
“The matter was postponed to 2 October, for further investigation,” NPA spokesperson Advocate Luvuyo Mfaku said.
McBride is accused of child abuse with an alternative charge of assault with the intent to do grievous bodily harm.
The State did not oppose bail on the condition that he does not make contact with the witnesses in the case.
McBride has denied the assault which allegedly happened on August 19. At the time, he said he was “admonishing” her, however, according to reports, she said that the alleged assault was not an isolated incident and said that it “happened all the time”.
