PARLIAMENT, April (ANA) - A total of 510 people died on South African roads between March 29 and April 9, preliminary statistics presented by Transport Minister Blade Nzimande showed on Tuesday.
Briefing journalists in Cape Town, Nzimande said this was a 14 percent increase on the 449 people killed in accidents on roads during the same period last year.
"The number of pedestrians affected by fatalities increased from 33.8 percent in 2017 to 37.3 percent," said Nzimande.
"An increase was also recorded in the number of drivers killed, from 20.5 percent in 2017 to 25.6 percent. Passengers were the only user group that experienced a significant decline, from 43 percent in 2017 to 35.5 percent this year."
