Richards Bay local dies while surfing

A 30-year-old man from Richards Bay has died after falling unconscious while surfing on Saturday morning.

National Sea Rescue Institute spokesperson, Craig Lambinon, said the tragic incident happened at Alkant Strand Beach.

He said their local duty crew received a report at around 0800 of bystanders performing CPR on the surfer.

Lambinon said he was pulled out of the water by other surfers.

“Despite extensive CPR efforts, sadly, the man was declared deceased,” he said.

Police are expected to open an inquest docket.

Lambinon meanwhile said the NSRI was appealing to coastal water users around the South African coastline - bathers, boaters, paddlers, sailors, fisherman, and coastal hikers to always have the NSRI emergency numbers programmed in their phones.

"Dial 112 from your cellphone or call the NSRI EOC (24-hour NSRI Emergency Operations Centre) 0870949774.  Local NSRI emergency numbers can be found on our NSRI web page www.nsri.org.za."
