Former Hard Livings gang leader, Rashied Staggie has been released on day parole from Pollsmoor Prison in Cape Town.
His wife, three daughters and son met him at the prison on Monday before he was taken away in a correctional services vehicle.
Businessman Kenny Kunene, also offered his support.
Staggie served 11 years of a 15-year sentence for kidnapping and ordering the rape of a teenager.
Correctional Services spokesperson, Logan Maistry, outlines the conditions of his day parole.
"Every evening he needs to report back to the Correctional centre where he will be incarcerated and released every morning again. He will also be electronically monitored there is a tag that he will wear and his movements will be monitored 24 hours a day 7 days a week. Any violation of any parole conditions, depending on the nature of the violation, appropriate action will be taken"
Meanwhile, Maistry emphasised that granting Staggie day parole did not mean the end of his sentence.
He says parole means that the offender will serve the remaining term of his sentence under supervision within the community until the full sentence has been completed.
Maistry says Staggie will also become eligible for full parole.
