JOHANNESBURG, March 26 (ANA) – A Randfontein, Gauteng, traffic officer has been arrested for allegedly soliciting a bribe, the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) said on Saturday.
“The officer was operating a speed trap when he stopped an undercover member of the National Traffic Anti-Corruption Unit for speeding,” RTMC spokesman Simon Zwane said.
It was alleged that the officer then demanded a R100 bribe from the undercover official, he said.
The Hawks were called in and the officer was arrested. A cash sum of R4000 was found in his possession.
“The officer is employed by the Randfontein municipality. He is expected to appear in court on Tuesday.
The RTMC commended the anti-corruption unit for making the arrest. This was “evidence of government’s determination to deal with corruption within the traffic law enforcement fraternity”.
Members of the public were urged to report fraud and corruption on 0861-400-800, Zwane said.
