Ramaphosa to lead Freedom Day celebrations in Free State

President Cyril Ramaphosa will lead the national Freedom Day celebrations in the Free State on Friday.

The main event will be held at the Fr. Rantli Molemela Stadium in Bloemfontein.

The Presidency said that since the first democratic election on 27 April 1994, South Africa has celebrated Freedom Day and Month during April.

“The day and month are also utilised to mark the liberation of South Africa and its people from colonialism and apartheid,” the Presidency said.

“In the year South Africa is marking the centenary of the nation’s founding father, Nelson Mandela, the Freedom Day celebrations will recognise the role this global icon played in the attainment of freedom. “

The Presidency said that the theme for the 2018 Freedom Month celebrations is “The Year of Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela: Towards Full Realisation of Our Freedom through Radical Socio-economic Transformation”, supported by the sub-theme “Madiba and Ma-Sisulu – Pioneers of freedom and democracy”.

Meanwhile, Democratic Alliance leader, Mmusi Maimane, will be celebrating Freedom Day in Soshanguve in Tshwane.

Maimaine will “celebrate with residents that have recently been given full ownership title to government subsidised housing, as the DA is committed to doing wherever we are in government.”

“The DA has championed the distribution of title deeds to residents in the Metros where we govern, making true home-owners of people who have previously been permanent tenants of the state,” the DA said.
