President Cyril Ramaphosa has indicated his intention to appoint judge Mandisa Maya as the country's next Chief Justice.
"The President has further informed the JSC that he is considering appointing the Chairperson of the Electoral Court, Justice D H Zondi, to the position of the Deputy President of the Supreme Court of Appeal (SCA)," the Judicial Service Commission said on Wednesday.
The position of chief justice will become vacant on August 31 when Justice Raymond Zondo's term ends.
The JSC said as part of the consultation process, the President has asked it for its views on the candidates' suitability for appointment.
"Deputy Chief Justice M M L Maya and Justice D H Zondi have accepted nomination, and on 22 March 2024, submitted the required questionnaire for Judges and all the standard documents required of persons who seek to be appointed as Judges," the JSC said.
It has invited law bodies, members of the public and other interested institutions to make written submissions on the suitability or otherwise of the President's nominees for appointment as Chief Justice and Deputy.
These must reach the JSC by no later than 2 May, adding that "no comments received after the closing date will be considered."
The JSC said after that it will invite the nominees to attend interviews that will be open to the public, with details of dates and venues to be announced.
Zondo, who was the chairperson of the Commission into State Capture, was appointed in March 2022 by President Ramaphosa as the new Chief Justice of the Constitutional Court of South Africa.
