R4.3 million worth of Mandrax tablets seized in WC

Hawks Narcotics Bureau

The Hawks Narcotics Enforcement Bureau and other police role players in the Western Cape have arrested two suspects and seized a large quantity of Mandrax tablets valued at R4.3 million.

Lieutentant Colonel Philani Nkwalase of the Hawks says they responded to information about two vehicles, a Mercedes and a VW Transporter travelling with batches of drugs on the N2 highway from Gauteng to Cape Town.

The Mercedes was pulled over on the N2 near Grabouw and 24 packets of mandrax tablets containing 24 000 capsules and valued at approximately R840 000 were found hidden in the vehicle.

A 35-year-old suspect was arrested and the vehicle along with the drugs were seized for further investigation.

Nkwalase says the VW Transporter matching the description was spotted on the N2 highway in Heidelberg.

A total of 100 000 mandrax tablets valued at R3.46 million was found in 100 packets hidden in various false compartments in the Transporter.

A 52 year-old suspect was arrested and the drugs and vehicle were also confiscated for further investigation.

Both suspects are expected to appear in court on Monday.
