The Right2Know campaign says it welcomes the eventual release of government's list of national key points.
After more than two years of campaigning, the Minister of Police this week withdrew an application to appeal a high court order that the list must be provided to the SA History Archive.
The SA History Archive was joined by the Right2Know Campaign in the application which was brought in terms of a Promotion of Access to Information application.
"Now that we have this information, what do we do with it? The first thing that the public can do is ensure that they inform themselves and that we can begin to identify and challenge abuses of the National Key Points Act," said Murray Hunter, national spokesperson for the Right2Know Campaign.
"But, the second thing is to ensure that we can repeal the National Key Points Act. This is a democracy where there's no space for national key points and we can finally consign this law to the dustbins of history," Hunter said.
The National Key Points Act has been a source of contention between the government and various lobby groups after government used the Act to block inquiries into potential scandals.
It has been used to block publication of photos of president Zuma's Nkandla homestead and why the Gupta plane should not have landed at the Waterkloof air force base, among others.
Hunter also said that half the sites listed as National Key Points, are actually privately owned companies.
"There's a big question here about whether or not .. the private sector should get powers in terms of the National Security law in any case. But, the other interesting thing is that we see case studies from the last few years where officials have claimed that a certain place is a national key point but in fact that place does not occur on the list," he added.
Hunter said the list provided by the Police Ministry goes up to January 2015 and he also urged the Ministry to make it officially public so that if they add or take any national key points away this will ensure transparency in the system and curb abuses that "we're seeing" in the law.
