The SA Human Rights Commision says public hearings on water and sanitation issues will be held country-wide.
The public meetings start in Mpumalanga on Wednesday and will continue across all provinces until November.
The deputy chairperson of the Human Rights Commission, Pregs Govender, says the hearings will culminate in a national hearing in March next year.
The commission's findings will then be presented to Parliament and the people of South Africa.
The hearings were triggered by complaints in municipalities in the Western Cape and the Free State.
