The Independent Examinations Board has announced that the 2016 IEB matric pass rate of 98.67% for private schools was comparable to last year’s pass rate of 98.30%.
This year, 11 022 full-time and 703 part-time candidates from 237 examination venues across South Africa, Mozambique, Namibia and Swaziland wrote the IEB National Senior Certificate Matric examinations in October and November.
Of the 11 022 full-time students who wrote, 10 871 (98.67%) passed and only 151 (1.33%) failed.
According to the IEB, all candidates that passed achieved a pass that were good enough to enter tertiary study at one of the three levels with 87.61% of the cohort achieving entry to degree study.
Most private schools in the Eastern Cape recorded a 100% matric pass rate
Meanwhile the South African Council for Quality Assurance in General and Further Education and Training, Umalusi, said it approved the “credible” results of the highly anticipated 2016 National Senior Certificate matric examination results for government schools which would be released on Wednesday the 4th of January.
The chairperson of the Umalusi Council, Prof John Volmink told a media briefing in Pretoria on Thursday that the council was fully aware that some of its learners had to overcome some overwhelming difficulties in order to achieve a qualification in the grade 12 exam.
He expressed the council's hearty congratulations to all the learners who had done well in their exams in 2016, their teachers, parents, guardians and all that supported the learners.
Volmink also had a message for learners who would discover in January that they have not passed:
He said that to those who had not succeeded, they must not despair as there would be another chance for them in 2017.
