Deputy Minister of Correctional Services, Thabang Makwetla dropped a bombshell on Monday when he stated that the government gives prisoners better medical treatment than members of the public.
Speaking on World Aids Day at Johannesburg Prison, he said he was sorry to have to make the remark, but that it was the truth.
Makwetla said the idea that the country's prisons were disease-infested and that the health of inmates was neglected was incorrect and that the opposite was actually true..
He had visited six prisons in the past few days and said he was amazed at the quality of healthcare given at correctional centres.
