Limpopo police have launched a manhunt following a brazen attack on police by a heavily armed gang that freed six awaiting trial prisoners.
Provincial police spokesperson, Brigadier Motlafelo Mojapelo, said the members were busy transporting the awaiting trial prisoners on Monday when they came under attack outside Louis Trichardt.
He said the gang opened fire on the police, and freed the six Zimbabwean nationals, before speeding off in a Mercedes Benz vehicle and Toyota bakkie.
Mojapelo said the six were awaiting trial on charges of aggravated robbery, three counts of attempted murder, and unlawful possession of firearms and ammunition.
He said one man was in custody for cable theft.
Limpopo police have mobilised all resources, including the air wing, in the hunt for the escapees and the suspects.
