A prisoner was shot and killed, and another was wounded, as they attempted to escape from the Lansdowne police station in Cape Town yesterday.
The Independent Complaints Directorate says a police officer visited the cell area, and he was overpowered by one of the prisoners.
ICD spokesperson, Moses Dlamini says the prisoner wrestled the keys from the policeman, and freed four other inmates.
He says they tried to escape and police shot and killed one suspect, who was being held for the possession of stolen property.
Dlamini says another man, who was being held for housebreaking and theft, was wounded during the shooting, but managed to escape.
The three other prisoners were recaptured.
