Pretoria man arrested for making mocking covid19 video

Police have arrested a 23-year-old Pretoria man for allegedly making a video in which two men are seen mocking efforts to curb the covid19 virus.

In the video, which went viral, they also brag about not complying with lockdown regulations.

“In one of the snippets, one man appears to be standing in front of a police station and continued swearing about the virus,” said national police spokesperson, Brigadier Vishnu Naidoo.

He said after an investigation the suspect was traced to a residential complex in the Lyttelton policing area and arrested.

He will appear in court on Monday for contravening Regulation 11B of the Disaster Management Act 2002.

Naidoo said the arrest of this suspect as well as at least six others, for creating such videos and posting fake news, should be a reminder that they have the capability of identifying those responsible.

“The Regulations are being enforced not to punish people but to protect lives against this pandemic,” he said.
