President Jacob Zuma cuts short his Sadec trip following mining massacre

President Jacob Zuma has cut short his trip to a Sadec meeting in Maputo to return home to address the situation at the Lonmin mine following Thursday's massacre.

He presented a report to a Sadec heads of state meeting on Friday morning but is said to be on his way home.

Meanwhile, political parties and unions are demanding an urgent probe into the deadly shootings.

Police say more than 30-people were killed in a shootout between police and striking miners.

The ANC says it's crucial that authorities discover exactly what sparked the deadly confrontation between the two groups..

Meanwhile, Thursday bloodbath has made international headlines.

The Guardian, New York Times, Sky News, Denver Post, BBC, Washington Post, CNN, and several other media reported on the massacre.

Online encylopeadia, Wikipedia, also put up a detailed one-page entry on it.

The Guardian reported that the shooting had led to a sharp drop in the company's share price.

Lonmin executives said all its shafts across the South African platinum belt, which account for 12% of global supply, were closed to all but essential services.
