The Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa has given the assurance that the country has a robust safety regime in place governing rail transport.
CEO, Lucky Montana, gave the assurance at a media briefing on Wednesday, following Thursday's accident at Denver train station in Johannesburg.
One person died and over two hundred were injured when a Business Express train from Pretoria crashed into the back of a stationary Metroplus train at the station.
Prasa has already committed R25-million to assist those who were injured in the accident.
Montana said that Prasa was in the process of modernising the country's rail system which he said would go a long way to reduce accidents.
He said yesterday's accident confirmed the need to accelerate the modernisation process...
"That modernisations is currently underway and the incident yesterday confirmed the critical need to accelerate the process of modernisation. Modern trains are designed to absorb the impact" he said
