Post Office strike suspended

The strike at the SA Post Office has been suspended.

The Communication Workers Union says in a statement it engaged with workers over the past weekend, and after a number of considerations, the majority of workers resolved on suspending the strike.

The union says it refused to sign the wage agreement, as it further worsened the conditions of workers in favour of the company and the department.

Last week, two unions - the SA Postal and Allied Workers' Union and the Democratic Postal and Communications Union - agreed to a 6.5% wage increase for the bargaining unit, which would be effective on December 1.

CWU, which represents 39% of the employees, demanded a 7.5% increase.

According to Sapa, the union yesterday said that the 6.5 percent increase was not the mandate of workers, and the conversion of workers into permanent positions over a period of over two years was not acceptable.

Only 0.7% of the workforce remained absent from work on Tuesday.

The Post Office says it will take 22 days to process and deliver the mail backlog emanating from the three-month long strike.
