Policeman shot dead in Khayelitsha, 2 suspects on the run

A 45-year-old off-duty police sergeant was shot dead on Thursday in a robbery outside his home in Khayelistsha, Cape Town, where two suspects have gone on the run.

In a statement issued by Lieutenant Colonel Andrè Traut on Friday, police said the officer was shot dead at around 8.35 pm outside his residence in Jama Street, Site B Khayelitsha. He was stationed at the Lentegeur police station.

Police said two armed men accosted the officer and demanded that he hands over his gun, which he did not have on him. He had left it at the police station for safekeeping. Police said the sergeant was then shot dead.

The armed robbers stole an undisclosed amount of money from the sergeant and a cell phone before they fled, police said.

"We will make every endeavour, and apply our resources wisely to apprehend the two suspects who shot and killed one of our members last night in Khayelitsha," said the Western Cape Provincial Commissioner, Lt Gen KE Jula.

"Any person who can shed light on the circumstances of the case is kindly requested to contact Crime Stop on 08600 10111."
