Police in Fraserburg in the Northern Cape have arrested 18 suspects in connection with cases of malicious damage to property, housebreaking and theft and contravention of the Disaster Management Act regulations.
Spokesperson Brigadier Nohale Ramatseba says police received complaints of residents going on a rampage on Saturday, demanding to be sold alcohol and cigarettes.
The suspects looted a tuckshop and stole groceries worth about R100 000.
He says police were pelted with stones when they arrived on the scene and one officer broke his hand when the window of his bakkie was damaged.
The suspects, aged between 25 and 61, are due in court this week.
