Police to beef up patrols over Easter weekend

CAPE TOWN, April 12 (ANA) – The South African Police Service (Saps) on Wednesday said it would boost the number of officers visible on the country’s streets over the coming weekend to ensure citizens enjoy a “well-deserved Easter break in safety”.

In a statement, Saps said the heightened visibility would be evident with roadblocks, patrols and search-and-seizure operations in all nine provinces.

Acting national police commissioner Khomotso Phahlane said they hope to grow the trend of decreasing contact crimes and other serious crimes which have been observed in the first three quarters of the 2016/17 financial year.

“We call on all communities to play their role in ensuring their own safety over the holidays. This can be done by being vigilant, abiding by the laws of the country and the rules of the road, reporting crime to the authorities and exercising moderation especially when it comes to the use of alcohol,” said Phahlane.

Police called on people not to let down their guard as criminals “prey on people while they are relaxed”.

“We wish all in South Africa a happy Easter holiday break and assure you of our continued commitment to serve and protect,” Phahlane said.

“We thank all the men and women in blue who are sacrificing their family time and holidays to ensure peace and stability in South Africa. We call on all people to conduct themselves in an orderly manner, to abide by the rules of the road and not to drink and drive.”
