Police have confiscated 1.8 tons of dagga at a checkpoint on the N9 between Uniondale and Willowmore in the Karoo.
Police spokesperson, Captain Malcolm Pojie, said two men from Khyalitsha in Cape Town, aged 34 and 24, appeared in the Uniondale Magistrates' Court on Monday on charges of dealing in drugs.
They were arrested on Friday by members attached to the Hawks in George, Attakwa K-9 (Dog Unit Oudtshoorn) and the Eden Cluster Highway Patrol.
The officers pulled over the 10-ton Hyno truck in which the suspects were travelling, and discovered 85 bags filled with dagga in a false compartment in the truck.
The dagga was estimated to have a street value of approximately R2.6-million.
Pojie said Police suspected that the consignment dagga was being transported from Lesotho to Cape Town.
Both the Hyno truck and dagga were confiscated as evidence, and the men were detained at the Uniondale police holding cells.
The two accused, Zamuxolo Ngwata and Ntando Ngwata were remanded in custody at today's court appearance, and the matter was postponed to 1 June 2016 for legal representation.
Western Cape Police management has commended the members involved for their dedication and commitment to eradicate drug trafficking and the abuse thereof.
Eden Cluster Commander, Maj-Gen. Oswald Reddy, praised the officers involved. "It is evident that our joint efforts to police our main entrance and exit routes to and from the Western Cape in conjunction with all stakeholders, are yielding excellent successes."We shall therefore continue with these initiatives to bring culprits too book and appeal to law abiding citizens to report illegal activities, including drug trafficking," Reddy added.
