A Warrant Officer and a Sergeant were arrested and charged with corruption and soliciting a bribe after they were found with R70,000 in their possession in the Free State, police said on Wednesday.
Hawks spokesperson Brigadier Hangwani Mulaudzi said the men were arrested on Tuesday and set to appear in the Hertzogville Magistrates Court on Wednesday.
“The two were investigating a case of theft of a tractor and instead of doing their duties by the book they approached the suspect and demanded R100,000 so that they could destroy the case.”
Mulaudzi said the suspect gave in to their demands and handed the officers R30,000, with a promise to settle the balance at a later date.
On Tuesday, the Anti-Corruption unit of the Hawks got the information that the two officers were on their way to Hertzogville to collect the outstanding bribe money from the suspect, he said.
“The police officers, who allegedly had used a state vehicle illegally for their shenanigans, were arrested at a bank, with R70,000 cash in their possession.”
