Police officer arrested following armed robbery in Cape Town

A police officer was among three suspects arrested on the R300 near Mitchells Plain following a business robbery, the City of Cape Town said on Thursday.

A member of the Metro Police Camera Response Unit (CRU) was driving on the R300 highway from Mitchells Plain en route to Langa on Wednesday when a member of the public flagged him down, the City said in a statement.

The officer stopped and was informed that a resident’s business had been robbed by three males driving a VW Golf.

The officer, who was alone at that stage, managed to pursue and pull over the vehicle, as well as detain the armed suspects for questioning until backup arrived.

“Among the suspects was a South African Police Service officer from the Site B Khayelitsha Police Station whose weapon was duly confiscated by the Metro Police officer. A total of R2 095 in cash, found in his possession, was also taken as evidence,” said city mayoral member for safety and security JP Smith.

“High-calibre police work such as this should not go unrecognised, and we are looking forward to highlighting the successes of our officers and setting the tone for the new year at our annual awards event at the end of November.”
