KIMBERLEY, September 25 (ANA) – Police in the Northern Cape seized a large amount of cash when they stopped a car on the N1 highway near Colesberg, arresting two suspects on a charge of money laundering.
Police spokesperson Captain Olebogeng Tawana said on Monday that the seizure came during a multi-disciplinary operation involving police, Provincial Traffic and Home Affairs over the long weekend. The focus of the operation was on illegal firearms, stolen vehicles, transportation of illegal or stolen goods, the tracing of wanted suspects, undocumented persons and drugs.
Tawana said the two men, aged 18 and 21, were arrested when their car was searched at a roadblock on the N1 Colesberg Weigh Bridge after they were found in possession of a huge amount of cash stashed in the boot.
“The value of cash confiscated cannot be disclosed for investigation reasons,” Tawana said. “They were travelling in a white VW Golf V, direction Cape Town from Pretoria.”
The suspects were remanded after appearing in the Colesberg Magistrate’s Court on Friday, on a charge of money laundering.
Tawana said the suspects are due to appear again on Friday 29 September for a formal bail application.
