The Directorate for Priority Investigations, the Hawks, said the body of another cash-in-transit robbery suspect was found bringing to 19 the number of suspects killed in a dramatic shootout with police in Makhado in Limpopo last week.
Spokesperson, Lieutenant-Colonel Matimba Maluleke, said the body of the adult male was found in one of the rooms of a safe house in Eltivillas in Makhado on Saturday.
“This brings the total number of the deceased to 19 (17 males and 2 females),” he said.
A multi-disciplinary team swooped on a house last week, where, according to police, the suspects opened fire.
In the ensuing shootout, 18 suspects were killed and one police officer wounded.
Maluleke said the “suspects were about to leave the house to execute their mission when they realised that they were being monitored and they started shooting at the team,” resulting in a gunfight that he said lasted “for about 90 minutes.”
He said police recovered 11 firearms, a large amount of ammunition, several magazines for AK47, R-1, R-5 rifles, a pistol, as well as primed explosives, detonators, boosters, lead cords" as well as other explosives.
Several high-powered vehicles were also seized.
Maluleke said the process of identifying the 19 deceased would start on Monday.
