Police Constable declared unfit to possess a firearm

A police Constable from Bloemfontein has been declared unfit to possess a firearm following his conviction for assaulting a member of the public.

Spokesperson for the Independent Investigative Directorate (IPID) Robbie Raburabu says 35-year-old Constable Ezekiel Nkuta assaulted a 25-year-old man with a brick on the 30th of September 2018.

He says at the time, Nkuta was stationed at the Park Road Detectives office in Bloemfontein.

Raburabu says on the day of the assault, Constable Nkuta was in a fight with his girlfriend and another friend when the victim tried to stop the fight.

He says Nkuta assaulted him with a brick hitting out two of his teeth.

IPID says he appeared in court several times over the past five years until a conviction was secured last month.

Nkuta was sentenced to six months in prison or a fine of R6 000 wholly suspended for 12 months, on condition that he is not found guilty of a similar offence.

IPID confirmed that he was still on active duty, although he may not possess a gun.
