Police Constable and informer convicted on fraud

A former police officer who worked for the Crime Intelligence unit in the Northern Cape was convicted in the Kimberley Magistrates court for fraudulent informant claims.

The 38-year-old Constable Gift Neo James and his accomplice the 35-year-old John Seshupo Reid were both convicted last week.

In August 2012, James submitted fraudulent claims to the Provincial SAPS Finance office claiming that the payments were due to Mr Reid, who was a registered informer who supplied valuable information pertaining to criminal activities in the Northern Cape.

According to police, James submitted two claims for R6 000 and R15 000 respectively. The first claim was paid but with the second one, they became suspicious and stopped.

Both were found guilty and convicted on two counts of fraud.

Constable James was fined R60 000 or three years in prison, whilst Reid was sentenced to 36 months correctional supervision.
