Police have confiscated dagga weighing more than a ton at the Maseru border post with Lesotho in the Free State.
Sergeant Martin Xuma said police found 71 bags of dagga hidden in the back of a Toyota truck on Thursday.
They were searching every vehicle passing through the border post.
Xuma said police became suspicious while searching the truck, because its wheel base was long, but its loading area was short.
One of the policemen went to his house to fetch tools and the back wall of the truck’s loading area was opened.
They discovered dagga weighing 1,147kg, with an estimated street value of R1.6m in a hidden compartment.
The 52-year-old truck driver was arrested and will appear in court soon on a charge of dealing in dagga.
