Correctional Services Minister S'bu Ndebele says officials were too slow in protecting convicted killer Clive Derby-Lewis from being
attacked for a second time in a Pretoria prison.
Ndebele told an ANC briefing that perhaps they should have acted earlier to prevent him being attacked a second time.
Derby-Lewis was taken to hospital on Sunday after being stabbed by an inmate with a piece of broken glass.
Ndebele promised that he'll be placed in a single cell when he returns to prison to ensure that he remains safe.
In February, 78 year-old Derby-Lewis was attacked with a sharpened spoon by another prisoner and suffered lacerations on the head and hand.
He was sentenced to 25 years behind bars for his role in SA Communist Party leader Chris Hani's killing and has already served almost 20 years.
