The six year sentence imposed on Oscar Pistorius for the murder of his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp was "a just sentence."
That's the view of lawyer, Ulrich Roux, who became a household name as one of several legal eagles providing commentary on the Pistorius trial.
Speaking to Algoa FM News from the Pretoria High Court on Wednesday morning, Roux said that Judge Masipa was not there to serve the public's opinion but to serve the public interest.
He said the Appeals Court had convicted Pistorius of murder with dolus eventualis, meaning that he had no direct intent to kill her.
"It's not as if he decided he was going to kill Reeva Steenkamp then loaded his gun then shot and killed her. And, even though the court (Appeal) found that he should have foreseen that he could kill another person they still found him guilty of murder dolus eventualis with indirect intent," Roux said.
Roux says that the state has the option to appeal the sentence if they feel that the six year sentence was not enough.
However, Roux says this could be a risky move.
"They do run the risk, same as the defence, that a lighter sentence might be imposed. So, even though they think that the sentence should be harsher the Supreme Court of Appeal could impose a lighter sentence."
He added that on his understanding neither of the legal teams were going to appeal the sentence adding that he believes that is a "good indication" of the fact that the public should be satisfied with the sentence which has been handed down.
