Pinetown truck driver had fraudulent documents to secure job

An investigator looking into Durban's horrific Field's Hill crash believes many trucking companies in South Africa don't scrutinise the background of their foreign drivers.

Stan Bezuidenhout - hired by Sagekal Logistics, the company that owned the truck at the centre of the crash - addressed the media in Umhlanga on Monday.

Sagekal's owner, Gregory Govender, claims he only discovered after the crash that his driver, Sanele May, had submitted fraudulent documents to secure the job.

Govender says May was hired just four days before the crash.

When asked why the company had not run background checks before handing May the keys, Bezuidenhout said most companies test drivers rather than documents, as these can be bought.
