Parliament’s Presiding Officers are seeking an urgent with Chief Justice, Raymond Zondo, following his scathing remarks about the institution’s relative inaction in dealing with his State Capture findings and recommendations.

In a statement on Friday, Speaker, Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula and the Chairperson of the National Council of Provinces, Amos Masondo, they intend to address matters of concern between the Judiciary and the Legislature.

This was specifically in relation to Chief Justice Zondo’s remarks to the Human Sciences Research Council where he also said that if there was another attempt at State Capture, Parliament would fail to prevent it, among other hard-hitting comments.

Parliamentary spokesperson, Molotho Mothapo, said the objective of the meeting would be “to clarify any potential misunderstandings and to establish a common understanding of the respective roles and responsibilities of each arm of government within the context of Parliament's implementation of the commission's recommendations.”

“The Presiding Officers of Parliament are fully aware of their constitutional mandate and the need to collaborate and work harmoniously with the Judiciary,” he added.

Mothapo said this meeting would be an important step towards strengthening the relationship between the Judiciary and the Legislature, as well as fostering public trust and confidence in our democratic system.
