Parliament refers DA's request to remove Public Protector to Portfolio Committee

National Assembly Speaker, Thandi Modise will refer a request by the DA, that Parliament initiates proceedings to remove Public Protector Busisiwe Mkhwebane from office, to the Justice and Correctional Services portfolio committee.

The new parliamentary committees are yet to convene following the May elections and will only sit in July to elect chairpersons and determine their respective programmes.

Parliament says once established, the portfolio committee on Justice and Correctional Services will give attention to the request.

This, after the DA's chief whip John Steenhuisen had asked for removal proceedings against Mkhwebane, following a Pretoria High Court ruling that she had grossly over-reached her powers by recommending a constitutional amendment to change the mandate of the SA Reserve Bank.

In February, the former portfolio committee decided to recommend that the National Assembly not institute removal proceedings against Mkhwebane, saying it was premature.
