Two ER24 paramedics were lucky to escape unharmed after a patient opened fire at them and their vehicle in Glenwood, Durban on Thursday afternoon.
ER 24's Werner Vermaak says just before 5 pm, the paramedics arrived at a residential property, following a dispatch call for a 43-year-old man with a knife embedded in his stomach.
He says upon arrival, a woman and her daughter escorted the paramedics to the kitchen, where they found the patient.
The man then pulled the knife out of his stomach and started to threaten them.
Vermaak says moments later, the man produced a paintball marker and started firing solid ammunition at them and their vehicle, damaging windows on the side of the ambulance.
The paramedics were able to find shelter behind the vehicle and were not injured.
Police and other services arrived at the scene and the man later calmed down.
He was transported to hospital under police guard.
ER24 says a charged will be laid against the man at the Umbilo police station.
